- Definition: Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), is a type of Internet access delivered to a customer over copper wires and although it comes in a few different flavors, the most common DSL lines are inexpensive, lower quality connections that offer a fast download and significantly slower upload speed (A-Synchronous). DSL Internet access is also a shared service, meaning that the speed quoted is your “maximum” speed and the “actual” speed a business receives will fluctuate throughout the day, depending on how many neighboring companies are using their Internet connections from that same provider. DSL connections also do not typically come with a Service Level Agreement (SLA), and are prone to more downtime than higher quality connections, such as T1 and various Ethernet connections.
- Best Fit: A micro-sized company with non-critical Internet needs, looking for a very inexpensive Internet connection or a small company looking for an inexpensive, lower-quality, back-up Internet connection to their primary Internet connection.
